Preliminary figures from the University of Freiburg provide information about the number of students currently on campus as of 25 October 2017. The statistics indicate that 24,791 students – 543 fewer than last year – are enrolled for the Winter Semester 2017/18. "The figures we have gathered up to now have led us to conclude that the imposition of fees for foreign, non-EU students and additional courses of study are being felt," says Prof. Dr. Juliane Besters-Dilger, Vice-President for Academic Affairs. The Student Service Center will publish the final figures for the ongoing Winter Semester at the end of November 2017.

66 more students from abroad are studying at the university than did during Winter Semester last year. That puts the total of foreign students at 4,344. At the same time, however, there are fewer first and new registrations. This Winter Semester there are 1,161 first and 96 new registrations. By comparison, last year there were 1,267 first and 155 new registrations. First enrollments are students who are registering at an institution of higher education for the first time. New enrollments are students who have already matriculated at a university and are now continuing their studies after a break or are taking up a new course of study.

Of the foreign students, 2,520 come from outside of the EU. Last year, this figure was 2,502. 655 of these students were potentially subject to fees, but legal exceptions made 272 of them exempt. Among this group are 15 refugees who are now taking up regular studies this Winter Semester.

The number of new enrollments has dropped in comparison to last year by 278 to 1,303. The number of new students pursuing two courses of study has also fallen this year from last's years 230 to 66, with the total number of these students dropping from 458 to 116. These figures indicate that fees for additional courses of study, which will become due this Winter Semester, are having an impact.

All-in-all, there are currently 13,121 female students and 11,670 male students enrolled. 4,050 of them are first enrollments. 8,808 students are pursuing a Bachelor's degree, 5,280 are working on their Master's, and 5,919 intend to conclude their studies with a state examination.
