The Meaning and Knowledge of Things
Freiburg, Mar 14, 2017
Toys, collectibles, art, utensils and everyday ojbects – daily life is a constant dance with material culture. The culture of things and their effects on cultural studies is the main focus of the FRIAS junior researcher conference „MatteReality: Historical Trajectories and Conceptual Futures for Material Culture Studies” with researchers from the Departments of English and American Studies. The presentations range from classic material culture research to newer methods in the theory of things. Do people speak more about concrete things and objects today because the digital world has made life so much more intangible? Does such multitude and principle open-ended meaning of material culture require a possible material turning point? The conference will address these issues, acting as the interface between material culture research and the theory of knowledge.
