Voting for a new rector to take place in joint session of Senate and University Council on 27 May 2020

Freiburg, May 20, 2020

The University of Freiburg is ensuring that a vote for a new rector can take place on 27 May 2020 notwithstanding the corona pandemic: the electoral bodies, the Senate and University Council will meet for a joint session in the Audimax lecture theater – as the university’s largest lecture theater it has sufficient space to comply with the legal requirements set by the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg and epidemiological distancing and hygiene standards. Admission of all other members of the university as stipulated under the State University Law (LHG) will be enabled via live stream.

A joint session of the Senate and the University Council to vote for a new rector, who will assume office on 1 October 2020, will begin at 4.30 p.m. on 27 May 2020. The candidate who gains the necessary majority from both bodies will be appointed. In the first round, a majority of all members’ votes is required: 22 votes in the Senate, six on the University Council. If it goes to a second round, a majority of the members present would suffice, and in the third round a simple majority of votes cast.

Under the LHG the voting is open to the entire university. In addition, the bodies will decide at the start of the session whether other elements, in particular including the candidates’ presentations, will also be open to members of the university. Given the corona pandemic and related legal requirements and epidemiological distancing and hygiene standards it is not possible to admit any other members of the university to the Audimax. So the media center at the University Library is providing a live stream which will transmit all those parts of the meeting that are open to the entire university. The start time depends on the progress of the meeting.

Sign in with your university account

All members of the university who are interested can follow the live stream by signing in to their university account on the relevant page of the university’s media portal. You can if you wish also do this from home – a connection to the university’s network is not necessary. For members of the university who are unable to follow the live stream this way there is a limited number of places in lecture rooms 2004 and 2006 in Kollegiengebäude II, where the live stream will also be transmitted. If you want to follow the proceedings here, you must wear a face mask covering your mouth and nose the entire time you are in the building and sit in one of the marked seats as directed by the security team in order to ensure the necessary minimum distance between those present. The number of participants in both lecture rooms has to be limited to eighty. Therefore it is necessary to register for a place online by 26 May 2020 at the latest.

Afterwards, on the evening of 27 May 2020, the University of Freiburg will release the result of the vote at a press conference and in a press release which can also be seen on the www.uni-freiburg.de homepage.
