New Majorities in the Governing Bodies

The senate of the University of Freiburg has passed a resolution to change the university's constitution. The measure was taken in order to align the constitution with revisions that have been made to Baden-Württemberg's State University Law (LHG). Affected in particular are the definitions of a majority in the university's governing bodies with reference to the senate on a central level and faculty councils on a decentralized level.
In the future, the university's teachers will only have a majority of one vote relative to members of the rectorate and deans who are entitled to vote. This will apply to other status groups – students, non-professorial academic staff, administrative and technical staff, and doctoral candidates as well. Representation of the university's teachers will furthermore be decided entirely in elections in future. Members of the rectorate and deans who are not entitled to vote will solely have an advisory function at meetings of the senate and faculty councils.
Another reform is that doctoral candidates have been included in the constitution as a new status group and have a strengthened position as a result.
