Storm breaks off part of University Library facade

An element from the University Library facade fell towards Belfortstrasse, probably due to strong gusts of wind. It was a complete sheet of metal which fell onto the temporary roofing to secure the western entrance. That in turn had been put up after a mounting brace broke off the facade in August 2018. No-one was injured. Two further sheets of metal became partly detached from the facade and were in danger of falling. The police and the fire brigade have closed off Belfortstrasse as a precaution. The fire brigade and a specialist firm are working to ensure the facade elements are secure. They are also checking whether further security measures are necessary.

The building continues to function as usual; although the western entrance remains closed, the main entrance is open. The University Library asks visitors to respect the measures taken by the police and fire brigade to ensure public safety.
