Local and other sponsors enable 138 Deutschlandstipendium grants at the University of Freiburg

Freiburg, Jun 24, 2020

A sign of recognition: In the academic year 2020-21, 138 students from all phases of qualification and faculties at the University of Freiburg will receive a Deutschlandstipendium. Half of the annual scholarship of 300 euros per month is financed by regional and national sponsors, including businesses, foundations and private individuals. 147 members of the Alumni Freiburg association alone have donated a sum enabling 20 scholarships. However, there are also organizations that finance ten scholarships and link that donation to a specific faculty. For example, the Erzbischof Hermann Foundation has been providing ten Deutschlandstipendium scholarships annually to students at the Faculty of Theology since 2018. Starting this year, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation and Sick AG are enabling ten Deutschlandstipendium scholarships for the Faculty of Engineering, as is the biotechnology company CSL Behring. Under the Deutschlandstipendium scheme, Germany’s Education Ministry matches all funds raised, doubling the total value of the Freiburg University scholarships from 248,700 euros to 497,400 euros.

The University of Freiburg values the scholarships above and beyond their monetary value. To be selected, students must not only have a very good academic record, they must also demonstrate social commitment and challenges in their personal circumstances. The scholarship is initially granted for a year. However, many scholarship holders are able to maintain their high level of performance and reapply successfully. The University of Freiburg connects the scholarship holders with their sponsors even in the era of the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead of the traditional scholarship celebration, there will be a video conference. That will be the starting point for further, personal contact.
