According to the public’s collective memory, sexuality is central to the upheaval in the year “1968”: images of the naked-posing Kommune 1, Woodstock and hippies shape the narrative stemming from the late 1960s. The slogan “Make love, not war“ spanned the globe and with it an understanding of sexuality as an instrument for political liberation. Across various national borders, it seems a young generation rebelled against the muted sexual morality of their time. But did a sexual revolution really happen in 1968? The historian Dr. Sonja Levsen’s inaugural lecture addresses how the protest movements differed. Contextually, the German “68ers” showed an unusual development in Western Europe. By examining Germany, France and Great Britain, Levsen discusses particularities specific to the various nations, which have hardly been addressed by research. In her inquiry she asks how these particularities change our perspective on 1968.
