In the summer semester of 2017, the Lunch Lectures at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) will be about a basic human emotion – fear. In eight lectures, FRIAS fellows and professors at the University of Freiburg will report about what fear means in their area of study. In this semester, the lecture series will include reports from the disciplines of film studies, behavioral ecology, medieval studies, psychiatry, political theory, psychology and sociology.

The lectures will be held in eight sessions on Thursdays between 12:15 and 1:00 p.m. in Lecture Hall 1015 of Collegiate Building I located on Platz der Alten Synagoge in 79098 Freiburg. Film studies professor Dr. Barbara Mennel of the University of Florida in the US will give the opening lecture on 18 May 2017. Its title is "Pleasure and Fear at the Movies," and is about how fear is portrayed in films and how films can also produce feelings of fear in moviegoers.

The FRIAS Lunch Lectures are aimed at a broad audience and students in particular. Admission is free and registration is not required. The lectures are in English and will subsequently be made available via the FRIAS Media Center.
