Self-help books on nutrition, health and life issues give off the impression that a person how can control his or her feelings and actions is somehow professionally more successful, more satisfied, more social and healthier. Traditionally, psychology distinguishes between the volitional control of actions and automated, habitual action - which, according to recent research, is not tenable. But differences within and between individuals are due to the fact that action control can vary between focusing exclusively on one’s own goals and seriously considering situational circumstances. In the series “Freiburg Horizons,” psychologist Prof. Dr. Bernhard Hommel from the University of Leiden, Netherlands will address the fundamentals and factors influencing humans’ executive functions. He will especially focus on the question about whether a person can influence his or her actions through meditation, nutrition or brain stimulation. The speaker will be available for questions and comments after the talk.
