“Freiburg Environment Talks” with expert lectures about markets and climate targets on November 20, 2019

Freiburg, Nov 12, 2019

The two-part lecture series “Freiburg Environment Talks” examines the German energy sector. Prof. Dr. Heiner Schanz from the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Freiburg will highlight the ambivalent role of markets in public debates. On the one hand, they are interpreted as the actual drivers of many environmental problems, and on the other as an important key to sustainability. However, this raises the question of what markets actually are and to what extent they can be steered in the direction of normative goals of sustainable development. Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert from the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin will show what steps need to be taken in order for Germany to meet its climate targets. A coal phase-out is just as important as the rapid expansion of renewable energy and the implementation of a sustainable transformation of the transport industry.
