At the beginning of the 20th century, sports developed into a phenomenon with an enormous social reach. Modern sports heroes appeared on the scene as ideal types mediated by mass media, staged in carefully choreographed competitions, often utilized for political gain. Sportsmen and sportswomen continue to be heroized to the present day, despite all the oft problematic social and economic functionalization of the sports hero whose achievements are repeatedly questioned. The conference “Sports and the Heroics” illuminates the references between modern sport and heroism with examples from football, basketball and mixed martial arts.
