The latest Thomson-Reuters ranking of the 100 most innovative universities of 2018 gives the University of Freiburg high marks. At the regional level, Freiburg ranks first in Baden-Württemberg. In Germany, the university placed fifth, and internationally, 81st. Furthermore, Freiburg also leads among its partners in the trinational grouping Eucor – The European Campus. "We see these outstanding rankings as a major success – at the regional, national and also the international level," says University of Freiburg Rector Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer. The results demonstrate that our strategy 'Connecting Creative Minds – Trinational, European, Global' is the right course to follow in order to realize the potential of the University of Freiburg as a preeminent university for research and innovation world-wide,” he added.

The ratings of the Canadian media company Thomson-Reuters list universities whose innovations have the greatest impact on scientific and technical progress and the most influence on the global economy. The evaluation focuses on success in patenting, the number of patent families, and the volume of patents registered. Another assessment criteria for Thomson-Reuters is the amount of scientific publications, which provides information about the research performance of each institution being evaluated. The frequency with which scientists and researchers from other institutions cite Freiburg patents and publications, as well as cooperation with business and industry, are also included in the assessment.
