The University Library (UB) Freiburg will be closed on Thursday, September 17, 2020 for a routine check of the emergency power generator. Once a year, the University tests the UB’s emergency power generator under real conditions, in accordance with the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health. It simulates a power outage to check whether all the systems it supplies are working. In the event of a power outage, the safety-related technology such as smoke extraction, wastewater lifting unit, ventilation, fire alarm system or elevators must continue to operate reliably even if the building is supplied with emergency power for a longer period of time.

The University regrets this unavoidable inconvenience. The test requires real-life conditions, which can only take place on a normal working day when the technical building management staff and contractors are quickly available if needed. In order to keep the disruption to a minimum, the University chose a date during the semester break. The decentralized libraries at the University of Freiburg, which are currently open under corona conditions, are available to students as learning locations. In addition, the UB web services will also be available during the test.
