The Canadian media group Thomson Reuter’s ranking lists universities whose innovations are strongest in promoting academic and technological progress and which have the greatest impact on the global economy. It also sees the University of Freiburg in an excellent position at the national level, ranking Freiburg second in Baden-Württemberg and seventh in Germany.

On its website, the ranking highlights two research projects as outstanding examples of Freiburg's innovative strength.  The team led by Professor Dr. Lutz Hein from the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology succeeded in deciphering the epigenetic switches in heart muscle cells for the first time. And at the Department of Microsystems Engineering, the group led by Professor Dr. Moritz Diehl is working on high-altitude wind turbines that promise a high energy yield.

The University of Freiburg is a member of the university alliance, the German U15, which includes three further institutions in the top 100. “U15 universities are engines of innovation, and as such they are also internationally competitive. The Reuters Ranking is yet more proof of that,” says Professor Dr.  Hans-Jochen Schiewer, President of the German U15 and Rector of the University of Freiburg. “The remarkable placing of our universities is due to excellent basic research, a comprehensive spectrum of subjects and logical, consistently-implemented innovation strategies.”

German U15 universities as engines of innovation

The Deutsche Universitätszeitung (duz) presents its edition on the research, innovation and transfer activities of the institutions in the German U15 alliance. The University of Freiburg is represented in the publication with two start-ups: neuroloop develops an alternative method of treating high blood pressure, while Noor Medical aims to provide improved medical services to people in developing and emerging economies by designing medical equipment which works independently of a constant electricity supply.
