One of the best universities in Germany: the University of Freiburg has improved its position in the “Times Higher Education Ranking 2018-19” (THE-Ranking) by one spot in a national comparison. It is now number 5 nationwide. Internationally, the university is number 76, compared to number 82 the year before. The ranking judges more than 1,250 universities worldwide, including 47 from Germany. It assesses the university’s performance in the areas of teaching, research, publications, technology transfer and internationalization.

The result of the THE-Ranking coincides with the result of the Shanghai Ranking, which was published in August 2018: Freiburg ranks between 5th and 7th place among the German universities. The funding atlas published in July 2018 by the German Research Foundation also demonstrates its research strength: According to the atlas, the University of Freiburg is by far the university in Germany with the highest funding volume in terms of number of professorships and their range of subjects.

The THE-Ranking once again confirms the solid position as one of the top-ranking universities in Germany that we have held in all relevant rankings for years,” summarizes Rector Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer. “We have performed ‘very well’ to ‘excellent’ in all categories and have improved our position both nationally and internationally. It is a testimony to our overall strength and proves that we are on the right track with our research profile and our strategy development.”

Among other things, the THE ranking is based on a worldwide survey of more than 20,000 academians and the citation frequency in publications. It also takes into account statistical ratios, such as the proportion of international students or the ratio of teachers to students.
