Climate change and precipitation

The hydrologist Prof. Dr. Markus Weiler from the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Freiburg will address the topic "Floods and Heavy Rain in the City" in the series "Freiburger Umweltgespräche" ”(Freiburg Talks on the Environment)  - i.e. with events that seem to be accumulating over the last few years. Among other things, he highlights the processes that lead to flash floods during heavy rainfall and explains how local authorities and their citizens can better prepare for them. In addition, the 2018 drought has also shown that unlimited availability of drinking water will no longer be a matter of course even in regions like southwest Germany, where it has rained regularly until now. Dr. Andreas Becker, head of the Precipitation Monitoring Department of the German Weather Service, explains why this is so and why careful handling of fresh water is becoming increasingly important. A discussion will follow the presentations.
