A Dialect Reference

Work on the “Badische” dictionary began 100 years ago

Freiburg, Nov 26, 2019

Strictly speaking there’s no such thing as the “Badische” dialect – but the researchers of the “Badische” dictionary at the University of Freiburg’s Department of German aren’t worrying about that. The dialect is named after the Grand Duchy of Baden, which once covered an area stretching from Lake Constance and the bend in the Rhine near Basel up to the Bergstraße region and the Main river near Wertheim. The researchers are fathoming out tens of thousands of expressions from the Franconian and Alemannic language regions. The 85th issue has just been released – a reason for a little celebration. And a major celebration is also due: Freiburg researchers compiled the first part of the reference book 100 years ago.
