Dr. Anayancy Osorio has been awarded a German Research Foundation (DFG) grant of 1.9 million euros for her multidisciplinary work in materials science and engineering; the money will support an Emmy Noether junior research group. Osorio will spend the next six years at the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg’s Faculty of Engineering and at the Freiburg Materialforschungszentrum (FMF), conducting research into soft matter microengineering with her group.

Osorio developed hydrogel biomaterials which have the mechanical performance of tissue, while allowing cells to be fed and and biochemical conversion to take place. For this work, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts has sponsored her since 2016 as part of the Margarete von Wrangell Habilitation Program for Women. Osorio now wants to try to print her new, soft functional materials using a 3D bioprinting process, making them easier to reproduce. To this end, she will be working closely with research institutes at the French Universities of Lyon and Paris and building new networks. “My goal is to develop soft materials which can be mechanically stressed and which react with defined movements to changes in certain environmental parameters,” Osorio says. “They need to be constructed like biological materials, so as to share their mechanical or other functional characteristics.”

Financial support from the DFG's Emmy Noether Program enables outstanding early-career researchers to qualify for a university professorship by taking on the responsibility of heading a working group.
