Earn a Master’s in Global Urban Health

Pollution, noise, stress, a lack of exercise, and high crime rates are only a few of the health risks people living in large cities are exposed to. The rise in the global urban population is leading to an increased demand for specialists trained to develop strategies for managing health-related risk factors – particularly in newly industrialized and developing countries. This is where the new continuing education program Global Urban Health (GUH) comes in: Organized by the Center for Medicine and Society at the University of Freiburg’s Faculty of Humanities, the one-year English-taught master’s program is designed for graduates of degree programs encompassing at least four years of full-time studies in the social sciences, anthropology, health care, medicine, or related fields who have already gained work experience in a thematically related area. Applicants from developing countries will be preferred. GUH is a full-time degree program and costs 12,000 euros.
The students learn how to analyze health risks and related socioeconomic factors and develop strategies for improving the heath situation in urban living spaces. Topics treated in the program include infectious diseases, mental illnesses, violence, urban climate, and migration, particularly in middle- to low-income countries. Also planned are practical exercise courses and excursions as well as study trips to the World Health Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as to the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel. Graduates of the program will be qualified for positions in health care as well as at international organizations, migration services organizations, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, or other institutions dealing with health issues in urban living spaces.
