The new University of Freiburg statistics illustrates the developments during the 2019/2020 winter semester

The latest collected and evaluated statistics provide information on current student numbers at the University of Freiburg. A total of 24,391 students have enrolled for the 2019/2020 winter semester, a decrease of 221 compared to the previous year. This number corresponds to a decline of 0.9 percent, while the average number of students enrolled at universities in Baden-Württemberg fell by 1.7 percent. The number of first-year students at the University of Freiburg has risen slightly. 5,314 have enrolled this semester, compared to 5,311 in the 2018/19 winter semester. This means that Freiburg is not following the nationwide trend which, according to the Federal Statistical Office, shows a decline of 3.1 per cent in the number of new university students.

A total of 12,908 female students, 11,477 male students and six male and female students are currently enrolled at the University of Freiburg. Currently, 4,385 students come from abroad, which is 89 fewer than in the previous year. Among foreign students, 2,882 come from countries outside the European Union, 70 fewer than last year. The most popular degrees include the bachelor’s degree with 9,890 students, the master’s degree with 5,605 and the state examination with 5,850. In addition to the total number of enrolled students, 1,009 students of the University of Education who are enrolled in teaching degree courses at the University of Freiburg for the first time this winter semester have to be considered.
