Members of the Senate and the (Grand) Faculty Councils have been elected

Freiburg, Jul 26, 2023

University elections took place from July 13 to 19, 2023. All member groups of the University of Freiburg elected their representatives to the Senate and the (Grand) Faculty Councils. In the University Elections 2023, which took place from July 13 to 19, 2023, the member groups of the University of Freiburg - university professors, academic staff, students, doctoral candidates, and administrative and technical staff - elected their representatives to the Senate and the Faculty Councils or Grand Faculty Councils.

The voter turnout across all voter groups was 13.44%, slightly higher than in the last major elections in 2019, when it was 12.8%.

For the first time, the election regulations included provisions for equal representation on the ballot. Twenty-one of the 40 elected members of the Senate are now female.

The Senate represents all areas of the University. The terms of office for council members begin on October 1, 2023, and last until September 30, 2024, for students and doctoral candidates, and until September 30, 2027, for all other elected members. By virtue of their office, the rector, the chancellor and the equal opportunity representative also belong to the council. The Faculty Councils or Grand Faculty Councils have similar tasks and functions at the faculty level as the Senate has for the University as a whole.
