The University of Freiburg has advanced into the group of the world’s hundred leading universities on the internationally recognized ranking of the Jiaotong University in Shanghai, China, as announced on 15 August 2012. Freiburg placed 99 among the thousand higher education institutions compared in the ranking each year, making it the fourth-placed German university overall after those in Munich and Heidelberg.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities was initiated by the Chinese university in 2003 to compare the research performance of universities. It is based on criteria that are especially transparent for comparing performance in the natural sciences, including the amount of academic publications in prominent journals, the amount of citations, and highly respected prizes and distinctions like Nobel Prizes. In the Life Sciences, an area of special emphasis in Freiburg, the university leads the pack among German universities along with Munich and Tübingen. Freiburg is also one of the 100 most successful universities worldwide in the fields of Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy.

“University rankings have come to be perceived in a worldwide context. The University of Freiburg is now placed among the top 100 on the famous Shanghai ranking and is thus one of the four best German universities,” says the Rector of the University of Freiburg, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans-Jochen Schiewer. “This position underlines the high standing we enjoy worldwide. It is an expression of the excellent international reputation of the University of Freiburg in research and instruction.“
